Space Collectible - NASA Photos - Mercury 7 Astronauts, Signed by Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Deke Slayton, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper
Description : "Mercury 7, Their Missions"
On April 9th 1959, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) introduced the Project Mercury Astronauts. Leading the United States into Space were Alan Shepard, Virgil "Gus" Grissom, John Glenn, Donald "Deke" Slayton, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra and Gordon "Gordo" Cooper. These men would pioneer the Man in Space Program and write the early chapters of orbital flight around our planet.
As time goes by, we sometimes forget that most of the Mercury 7 took part in other missions, as in the Gemini and Apollo Programs. This is why you see so many other extra patches in this current historical representation.
The photograph of the astronauts standing in there space suits was acquired after several attempts to locate one that was true in colors.
The gold wings represent Astronauts from the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps, while the silver wings represent Astronauts from the U.S. Air Force.
The signatures are on the back of an unused 3 1/4 X 5 1/2 pre-stamped three cent U.S. Postcard. The three cent card is consistent with the cards that were available from the years of 1958 to 1963.
The black and white photos were obtained in order that we may see the astronauts out of their space suits and in a more relaxed atmosphere.
The size of the piece is approximately 33" X 43" or 81cm X 105cm. Black metal framed , acid free matting front and back, and Ultra-Violet light blocking Plexi-Glass. All framed pieces are very professionally packed, fully insured, sent UPS 3 Day, with shipping delivery confirmation.
We have purchased many Apollo and Mercury signed items from Josh McReadly. He inherited them from his grandfather Frank McReadly the original owner. Frank worked for a sub-contractor in Houston and the Kennedy Space Center. Hired by NASA from the early 1960's to the mid 1970's, he was able to come into contact with astronauts to obtain signatures, one of which are the Mercury 7 signatures you see in this piece.
